Student Government (SG) is a generally elected, sometimes appointed, student body that is meant to represent student interests to the faculty and staff of RIT, administrators, and the board of trustees. It is part of the institute's shared governance structure with Staff Council and Academic Senate. Among other tasks assigned to Student Government is to distribute student activity fees, promote cooperation within the institution, and provide services to student organizations and the RIT community. It was previously called the Student Council and the Student Association.[citation needed]
The purpose of RIT's Student Government is to represent the students through a centralized representative government. To facilitate communication and understanding between students, the student government, and the university. To solicit and receive student issues, concerns, and opinions. To ensure and expand student participation in institute decisions affecting students. To safeguard the individual and collective rights and freedoms of students. To coordinate and expand student involvement in all areas of campus life.
During the administration under Ashley Carrington and Tyler Pierce, Student Government concluded that it would be very beneficial to create a Strategic plan, but before a strategic plan could be created, a mission statement was needed. The following is the mission statement that will be voted on in senate on Friday, December 5, 2014:
To represent to the interests of the student body through the implementation of innovative programs, services, and initiatives that enrich student lives. We will be the primary source of advocacy for students from Rochester Institute of Technology and we will utilize our shared governance structure to voice student opinion and concern. RIT Student Government will be the forefront of change within the university.
