RIT Dubai, in Dubai Silicon Oasis, United Arab Emirates

Dubai campus is a RIT satellite campus located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The main campus is located in the Dubai Silicon Oasis[1] and started offering part-time graduate courses in Fall 2008. In 2009, the university began its full-time graduate program. The first graduating class of RIT Dubai was in 2010 with the graduation ceremony taking place in the main campus in Rochester, NY. [2].

Mission

The RIT Dubai community engages and motivates students through stimulating and collaborative experiences. Our mission is to provide technology-based educational programs for personal and professional development. We rigorously pursue new and emerging career areas. We develop and deliver curricula and advance scholarship relevant to emerging technologies and social conditions. Our community is committed to diversity and student centeredness and is distinguished by our innovative and collaborative spirit. Internal and external partnerships expand our students’ experiential learning. RIT Dubai is committed to mutually enriching relationships with alumni, government, business and the world community. Teaching, learning, scholarship, leadership development, and student success are our central enterprises.[3]

History

RIT Dubai was established in 2008 in the United Arab Emirates, with the mission to provide quality higher education in the region.[4]. Undergraduate programs start in the fall of 2010.[5]

The founding president of RIT Dubai is Dr.Mustafa A.G. Abushagur.[6][7]. He led the efforts to establish an RIT satellite campus in the middle east. He mediated the negotiations between Rochester Institute of Technology - New York and the government of the United Arab Emirates to set up a campus at the Dubai Silicon Oasis in Dubai, UAE.[8]

In 2013, Dr. Youssef Al Assaf was appointed as the new president of RIT Dubai [9][10] following the leave of Mustafa A.G. Abushagur who became the first elected prime minister [11][12] in the modern history of Libya.

Student Government

The first official RIT Dubai Student Government was inaugurated in May 2013. The RIT-D SG overlooks the following: Student Activities and Life, Student Clubs and Organizations (SCO), Athletics and Dorms. We serve to represent the interests and concerns of the RIT Dubai student population, and advocate any of their issues and suggestions to the RIT Dubai administration and Dubai Silicon Authority. As SG, we hope to increase and nurture student involvement throughout the various activities on campus, whether it is related to Student Government, Athletics, Clubs and Organizations, Academia, Career Services and more.

Being located in the heart of the Dubai Silicon Oasis community, we do our best to contribute to the DSO community and schools nearby. We believe it is important to give back to the community. However, we do not limit ourselves to just DSO, as we are equally involved with initiatives and events that take place across the United Arab Emirates. We hope to continue to build our presence in the country in both the educational and professional scene.

Events

To enhance the student experience here at RIT Dubai, the Student Government and all active clubs strive to provide students with as many events as possible. These events include both those related to academia, and others simply dedicated to the students enjoyment

Past Events

During the Fall semester of 2014 SG held multiple events, each of which were designed to encompass the traditions of all cultures so that no student felt left out. Starting off all the events was the club's fair in September, from which both new and old clubs were able to gather together and register new members. In celebration of Halloween during October, the SG events committee turned the entire first floor of the campus into a haunted house for one night which turned out to be a huge hit among students. For Thanks Giving in November, SG held a charity inspired event, during which students came together for a thanks giving dinner and prepared meals for the less fortunate afterwards. In the same month, SG also planned an excursion to a park in Al-Ain for a BBQ. To draw the semester in to a good end in December, SG held a Winter Ball at the JW Marriott and also held an event in celebration of UAE's National Day.
