Pi Kappa Phi (ΠΚΦ; also Pi Kapp or Pikapp) is an American social fraternity. It was founded by Andrew Alexander Kroeg, Jr., Lawrence Harry Mixson, and Simon Fogarty, Jr. on December 10, 1904 at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. Pi Kappa Phi is the only Greek-letter organization to own and operate its own philanthropy, Push America, which works with individual chapters to serve people with disabilities. Push America hosts a number of national events including Journey of Hope, a 4,100-mile bicycle ride across the United States, and Build America, a traveling construction team around the U.S. to camps that help children with disabilities. Both raise money and awareness for people with disabilities.
The Theta Psi chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is located at the Rochester Institute of Technology, in Rochester, New York. The organization began as an associate chapter in April 9, 2009, and received their charter (full membership and chapter recognition) March 13, 2010. Theta Psi was the 215th chapter to have been granted a charter from the national organization of Pi Kappa Phi. The primary founding precept of the Theta Psi chapter was to change the image of fraternity which existed in stereotype on college campuses across the nation.
The Theta Psi chapter of Pi Kappa Phi exists to foster genuine brotherhood in an environment of CLASS – Character, Leadership, Academics, Sportsmanship and Service; where male college students develop into true gentlemen. As distinguished men of CLASS, members of Pi Kappa Phi seek to redefine fraternity as a lifelong brotherhood of leaders.
Members focus on their assumed commitment as college students and are always striving to progress their full scholastic potential. After their first year of existence at RIT, the chapter won Greek Awards for Highest Fraternity GPA and Excellence in Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Members play an active role in serving the local Rochester community though various acts of volunteerism. Since 2009, members have collaborated with Rochester's Arc of Monroe by attending events hosted for disabled Arc of Monroe patrons such as bowling league matches, dinners, and dances. During these events Pi Kappa Phi members and disabled Arc of Monroe patrons establish genuine friendships which mutually touch each others' lives. In 2010 the chapter adopted a 2 mile portion of Ballantyne Road, also located in Rochester. Chapter members volunteer time to pick up trash and debris off the road, making it a safe and more attractive area to live and commute. In addition to community service, the chapter faithfully upholds the traditions and activities of RIT and continually strives to evolve its Greek community.
