Men's hockey is RIT's male ice hockey team and generally recognized as RIT's flagship athletic operation.

History

The RIT hockey club was founded in 1959 by a group of students interested in starting a hockey team. They were given a budget from the university necessary to outfit 16 students with equipment. At the time, it participated the Monroe County Amateur Hockey Association, playing against other league teams.

While the players were given a budget for equipment, they paid for the games out of their own pockets. They did not have a professional coach either, and thus coached themselves as well. The 1960-1961 season consisted of entirely away games because the league was dissolved due to a lack of ice time at the rink that the league was using.

In the 1961 school year, James Musker became a volunteer coach for the team and with the support of the Student Council the club's budget was increased.

In 1965 men's hockey became an official varsity sport. The team joined the ECAC Division III East for the 1972-1973 and moved up to Division II in 1980.

In 1982 the team won its first NCAA championship in Division II. It moved to Division III the following year and won the Division III championship in 1985.

In 2005 the team moved to its current position in NCAA Division I and became a full-fledged member of the Atlantic Hockey Association in 2006.

In 2010 the team won the Atlantic Hockey tournament and received Atlantic Hockey's one bid for the NCAA tournament. The team then went on to defeat the University of Denver and University of New Hampshire to become the champions of the East regionals and advanced to the Division 1 semifinals--the Frozen Four--in Detroit, Michigan. However, the team was defeated in the semifinals by the University of Wisconsin.

Though they did not play in the final match, many spectators at Ford Field observed a steady chant of "RIT, RIT" during the championship match the following day.
