The fundamental purpose of the Sigma Chi Fraternity is the cultivation, maintenance and accomplishment of the ideals of friendship, justice and learning within our membership.
Sigma Chi Fraternity best serves its purpose by developing, implementing and monitoring programs that foster leadership, build character and promote positive relationship skills which, in turn, enable our members to become productive and caring participants in their families, colleges and communities.
Sigma Chi's core values are friendship, justice and learning. Our vision is to become the preeminent collegiate leadership development organization-aligned, focused and living our core values. Our mission is to develop values-based leaders committed to the betterment of character, campus and community.
Sigma Chi (ΣΧ) is a North American social fraternity founded on June 28, 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Sigma Chi has seven founding members: Benjamin Piatt Runkle, Thomas Cowan Bell, William Lewis Lockwood, Isaac M. Jordan, Daniel William Cooper, Franklin Howard Scobey, and James Parks Caldwell. Since then, Sigma Chi has expanded to more than 240 undergraduate chapters, over 120 alumni chapters, and more than 300,000 initiates making it one of the largest fraternities in the world.
On October 25, 2009, the 7 founders of our chapter met for the first time. On January 25, 2010, the Declaration of Intent to become a Sigma Chi colony was accepted. On February 13, 2010, the Founding Pledge Class was initiated. Over the next few months the Colony held numerous socials and participated in RIT events like Mug Tug, where the Colony team came in second place.
On April 9, 2011, the Lambda Kappa chapter was fully established on Rochester Institute of Technology's campus. The chapter had it's Alpha Pledge Class in the Fall of 2011 with the initiation of 5 new Brothers on 5 November 2011.
Pledgeship is a probationary period for potential members before they are fully initiated into Sigma Chi. The pledgeship process at the Lambda Kappa Chapter lasts approximately 7 weeks. During this time the pledges are led by the Magister who guides them though the process in which they will become familiar with the history of Sigma Chi, the workings of Sigma Chi, leadership skills, and their expectations as a potential Brother.
All potential members in Sigma Chi are given a pledge pin and a Norman Shield. The Norman Shield is a guidebook that contains all of the information necessary for the pledgeship process and serves as a helpful reference even after initiation. Pledges are assigned Big Brothers ("Bigs") to provide guidance and support on a more personal level that will continue past pledgeship.
Sigma Chi adopts a strong policy against hazing and it is the job of the Magister to ensure that none occurs in any form.
