RITpedia:About - RITpedia

RITpedia (pronounced Rit-pedia) is a web-based, free content guide to everything related to RIT. The name is a portmanteau of the university's abbreviation and encyclopedia.

RITpedia is written collaboratively by a group of volunteers. Anyone with an RIT user account can write and make changes to Ritpedia articles. Since authentication is done by RIT username and password, edits are not fully anonymous, but Ritpedia does not permit editors to include personal information (including full name) about other editors in the wiki without that editor's consent.

Visitors do not need specialized qualifications to contribute. Ritpedia's intent is to have articles that cover all areas with a material relationship to RIT to enable individuals who want to know more about a topic to have a single point of information to do so.

Most articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet and an RIT user account, simply by clicking the edit this page link. Anyone is welcome to add information, cross-references or citations, as long as they do so within our editing policies and to a reasonable quality standard. Substandard or disputed information is subject to removal. Users need not worry about accidentally damaging Ritpedia when adding or improving information, as other editors are always around to advise or correct obvious errors, and Ritpedia's software is designed to allow easy reversal of editorial mistakes.

Because Ritpedia is an ongoing work to which, in principle, any member of the RIT community can contribute, it differs from a paper-based reference source in important ways. In particular, it encourages all students, faculty and staff members to contribute content and as such attempts to avoid any particular editorial biases that affect other works. Also, older articles tend to be more comprehensive and balanced, while newer articles more frequently contain significant misinformation. Users need to be aware of this to obtain valid information and avoid misinformation that has been recently added and not yet removed. However, unlike a paper reference source, Ritpedia is continually updated, with the creation or updating of articles every day rather than months or years for the university's staff-coordinated publications.

What Ritpedia is will give an understanding of how to consult or contribute to Ritpedia. Information for parents of students is available at Parents. Questions about the project should be posted on the Question Board.
