The Rochester Athenaeum was founded in 1829, with Nathaniel Rochester as its first president.

The Mechanics Institute, which was founded in 1885 by Henry Lomb, merged with the Athenaeum in 1891.

The combined entity was known as RAMI (The Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute) until 1944, when it became RIT.
